What is the New Orleans Coffee Festival?

A one day event devoted to the celebration of people coming together to enjoy drinking and learning about coffee in a fun, welcoming, community atmosphere, with plenty of good food and music, highlighted by locally produced complementary products.

This concept was launched in October 2009 at the Freret Market amidst rave reviews. About 5,000 people attended, a record-breaking level of attendance for the Freret Market, which has been underway monthly for over two years. The energy and synergy of bringing together those who craft local coffees with those who love coffee was a unique and exciting opportunity, and a lot of fun, too. Of course, given the impressive success of the first year’s event, plans to make this an annual were immediately born.

When is it?

The 2nd annual New Orleans Coffee Festival is on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Freret Market (located at Freret Street near Napoleon Avenue) from noon to 5pm. The Freret Market’s mission of “providing a family-friendly neighborhood environment for the community to meet up each month with friends, enjoy good food, listen to music, and buy some art” is in close alignment with the purpose of the New Orleans Coffee Festival. In addition to the coffee exhibitors, there will be a wide variety of vendors, about 100 in total, including produce, baked goods, candles, t-shirts, jewelry, tiles, paintings, books, magnets, bags, music, and lots of good food and live music throughout the event.

Who attends?

Attendees will be those with a passion for coffee, who enjoy sharing good times with other coffee-lovers, and who are interested in learning more about coffee’s origins, growing and harvesting, roasting, grinding, blending, brewing, cupping, food recipes, fair trade, bird-friendly, and organic certifications, as well as the health benefits associated with it. This is not a trade show; it is open to the public. It is a unique opportunity for coffee roasters and brewers to personally meet their loyal customers, as well as be introduced to potential new customers, especially those who are naturally adept at creating buzz about products they embrace with exuberance.

The New Orleans Coffee Festival also serves as a cost effective informal focus group for exhibitors to learn firsthand about their loyal customers’ brand perceptions and guide them in their quests to enjoy that perfect cup of coffee, while they relax in the company of friends, both old and new. What a perfect opportunity for companies to extend invitations to their database of clients to come out and join the celebration of coffee and meet the people behind their favorite coffees!

For now, this is a local event, but we will all watch the New Orleans Coffee Festival will become a popular tourist attraction over the next few years. It is the creative ideas and combined energy of the people who choose to be a part of the New Orleans Coffee Festival is what will make it flourish. Suggestions and feedback are appreciated and encouraged.

What makes this event unique?

Most are amazed that a New Orleans Coffee Festival has been so long in the making, but this eagerly anticipated experience finally occurred last year – and is now here to stay each year! Heartfelt thanks go out to those dedicated supporters who have offered their continued encouragement and enthusiasm in making this dream a reality for all to enjoy.

The specially designed Cupping (Tasting) Flight is the featured highlight of the New Orleans Coffee Festival. Attendees may purchase a Cupping Flight Ticket for $5 from the New Orleans Coffee Festival booth; which entitles them to select up to 4 different 4 oz. tastes of coffee brands/blends (or any combination, for example 2 double tastings, or even a jumbo tasting of just one favorite) from the coffee vendor exhibits. Each of the vendors may select up to 4 different blends to present on the Ticket at the Festival. The Tasting Flight Ticket for last year’s event is at the end of this packet. There were 28 different coffees presented, from all around the globe. Packaged coffee for home-brewing is also available for purchase by attendees.

Additionally, coffee experts will be speaking about coffee and demonstrating tips on coffee roasting, grinding, brewing, tasting, storage, and usage in food recipes. Please visit the website for a complete updated list of presenters and topis. NewOrleansCoffeeFestival.com

The New Orleans Coffee Festival is not owned by any existing coffee brand, thus is able to independently facilitate the coordination of the various local coffee roasters and retailers, supported by those local businesses which compliment the coffee trade. Despite the high level of interest in this event, exhibit spaces and sponsorship opportunities will be limited for again this year, so that the Festival can continue to start off smoothly in the relaxed spirit with which it was born, with strong relationships being forged between all parties to lay the foundation for well-planned successful growth.

Why such interest in Coffee?

Wine consumption exploded in the U.S. during the 1970’s, the 1980’s brought beer micro-breweries into the spotlight, and then came the gourmet coffee shop boom in the 1990’s. In the 2000’s, the grocery coffee aisle tripled in size as consumers began to appreciate the taste differences of the large variety of coffee beans, roasts, blends, grinds, and brewing methods. The 2010’s are expected to attract even more interest in coffee, especially at-home brewing and coffee-related social events, due to the economical nature of the coffee beverage, its proven ability to “help get things done” through its inherent natural energy boost, and the growing variety of brands and selections available.

Coffee is consumed worldwide – it is a $19 billion per year industry, and is the fourth most valuable agricultural traded commodity in the world. Coffee is the #2 most consumed beverage in America (carbonated soda is #1). Over half (about 54%) of Americans drink coffee at least once a day, and over 77% of the adult U.S. population consumed coffee during the past year, with 63% consuming weekly. At-home coffee consumption is up by 5 points, with 83% of all coffee drinkers brewing coffee at-home at least once weekly. Of coffee consumers age 18-24, 29% now drink coffee daily; this target market is especially ripe for growth, as most have only purchased coffee in coffee shops, but are now eager to learn how to master the art of creating the perfect cup of coffee to suit their recent more cost-conscious tastes.

How can drinking coffee be good for your health?

In recent decades, some 19,000 international studies have been done examining coffee's impact on health. Here are a few of the findings:

  • Enhances the functioning of the heart and metabolism
  • Enhances memory and the ability to focus
  • Stimulates the creative spirit and associative thinking
  • Coffee has large amounts of antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid and tocopherols, and minerals such as magnesium, which have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
  • Coffee contains more life-giving antioxidants to help fight cancer and heart disease than the former champions: cranberry, apple and tomato.
  • Coffee helps to prevent hardening of the walls of blood vessels, since it increases blood content of benign cholesterol
  • Coffee can help prevent the increase of blood pressure, as it contains polyphenols, which help expand the blood vessels
  • Coffee has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease
  • Regularly drinking coffee has been shown to lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease by 80%
  • Colon cancer risk has been shown to be 25% less in coffee-drinkers than non-coffee drinkers, and 80% lower liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones and other liver diseases
  • Some studies show evidence that coffee may help manage asthma by increasing blood circulation and improving lung capacity
  • Coffee has been proven to improve your mood and to diminish feelings of depression as it provides for an increase in the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine
  • Increases stamina
  • Helps to overcome drowsiness
  • Can reduce headache pain by improving circulation
  • Stimulates activity of kidneys and improves the effectiveness of the digestion of food, relieving irregularities in the work of the digestive system, like heartburn, gastritis, etc.
  • The compound in coffee, trigonelline, which gives coffee its bitter taste and its aroma have been found to provide anti-adhesive and antibacterial properties which help prevent dental cavities from forming and reduces plague.

Why in New Orleans?

Coffee is an integral part of the local culinary and social traditions in New Orleans, due to the city’s world-renowned reputation for fine food and drink, along with its long history in the coffee trade industry. New Orleans is one of the largest and oldest coffee importing ports in the country, with about 241,000 tons arriving annually from countless different regions in thirty-one countries around the world. Most of the imported coffee continues on its journey to roasting facilities further inland, but some of the coffee remains in Louisiana to be roasted and blended in the unique taste profiles offered by dozens of proud local coffee companies, some now in the fourth generation of families.
